About me
Welcome and thank you for your interest in getting to know the face behind the lens at Mia Kani Photography! I'm honored that you are here. I'm Sowmya and I'm a photographer based in Westchester County, NY. I wear many hats (quite literally, actually! I love hats) - I'm a physician, photographer, mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. Here, you can get to know me and the things that shape who I am and how I see when I am behind the lens. My photographic work is just as much an expression of who I am as it is of the subject matter that I photograph and I shoot not just what I see but what I 'feel'.

I believe that photographs give tangibility to the things that cannot be seen by the eye but can be felt with the heart. As a physician, I consider it an honor to help people during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. And photography help us see the beauty in life despite those vulnerabilities that exist. I love sharing this joy with clients, friends and the world. Just like it enriches my life by filling my heart with gratitude to be alive, it is my hope that my photographs will instill a sense of wonder and awe in you about at all that life has to offer.
ARTIST BIO

Award-winning New York based photographer, Sowmya Kanikkannan, has been honing her skills in travel photography and portraiture since 2008. With extensive travel experience throughout the world from a young age, she has a unique understanding of cultures and societies that is reflected in her creative approach to her photographic work.

Sowmya’s artistic expression through photography is blended with over a decade of experience working as a physician. In this role, she considers it an honor that people share a part of themselves with her during their most vulnerable moments. This experience brings about another element to her photography that allows her to extend the range of her talent even further. Her understanding of people and emotions challenges the boundaries of people photography – utilizing moments in life to tell stories, which explore the depth of our existence and the human connection, on life's adventurous journey. Her interest in understanding and expressing life and all of life’s beauty through photography brings about the perfect marriage of her two passions – Medicine and Photography.
Her photographic work with families and newborn has won people's choice award and has been published in several magazines world-wide. Her artwork has been exhibited in various art galleries in NY and beyond.
